Not all microSD cards perform the same on a modded Switch. The number on the packaging tells you almost nothing about how the card will actually handle CFW boot times, overlay responsiveness, or emulation performance.
I benchmarked 20+ cards on a Nintendo Switch using Hekate’s built-in SD Card Benchmark tool. Every card on this list was tested under the same conditions on the same hardware. The tier rankings are based on a weighted score: SEQ 16MB (40%) + SEQ 4KB (35%) + RND 4KB (25%), with RND IOPS prioritized as the most homebrew-relevant metric.

Understanding the Numbers
Before jumping into the tiers, here’s what each metric actually means for your modded Switch:
SEQ 16MB/s — The headline speed you see on packaging. Affects initial game launches and large file transfers. All DDR200 cards land between 80–97 MB/s and the real-world difference here is minimal.
SEQ 4KB/s + SEQ IOPS — How fast the card streams small sequential data chunks. This drives texture loading and general smoothness during active gameplay.
RND 4KB/s + RND IOPS — The most important metric for CFW. EmuMMC, Hekate, Atmosphère overlays, patches, and save data are all scattered randomly across the card. Higher RND IOPS means faster CFW boot, snappier overlays, and less stutter.
DDR200 vs SDR104 — The Switch supports DDR200 bus mode, giving compatible cards a ~30–40% higher performance ceiling over SDR104. This is an especially important factor for Android and Linux performance. Note that the Switch OS (Horizon OS) is limited to SDR104 so if you don’t plan on using Android or Linux, SEQ and RND read speeds are more important. DDR200 can be useful when manipulating large files using and SD reader (like using Switch Toolbox to backup or restore).

Samsung EVO Plus 512GB — Buy on Amazon Averaged from 2 cards. Top performer across every metric. Best overall balance of sequential and random performance. This is the benchmark everything else is measured against. Data from 2 cards, I would personally select newer evo select or pro plus models, but this one did perform the best in my testing.

Samsung EVO Select 512GB (DDR200 variant) — Buy on Amazon Averaged from 2 cards. Virtually identical to the EVO Plus with very consistent speeds. My personal pick for best performance-to-price ratio.
Warning: The EVO Select 512GB ships in two hardware variants with the exact same model number (GF8S5). The newer blue DDR200 version is the one you want — it lands in S tier. The older green SDR104 version lands all the way down in D tier.

SP 3D NAND 128GB — Highest sequential read of any card tested. Random read is weaker than the Samsung cards, but still solid. I’ve had some customers report reliability issues with SP cards in general, but this specific card tested well.

Excellent performers. You won’t be disappointed with any of these.

SanDisk Imagemate 512GB (model SD512, New logo) — Buy on Amazon Surprisingly well-rounded. Sequential and random reads are nearly identical, making it very consistent under mixed workloads. Couldn’t find a stock photo of the new logo, unfortunately.

Samsung Pro Plus 512GB — Buy on Amazon Strong random read IOPS — second only to the EVO Plus/Select in that category. Great choice if your priority is CFW responsiveness over raw sequential speed.

Amazon Basics 512GB — Buy on Amazon Sequential speed matches the top tier but random read falls off noticeably. Still a solid card if you find it on sale and don’t need peak CFW performance.
B Tier
Good cards that get the job done well. Minor trade-offs compared to the top tiers.

SanDisk Pokemon 1TB — Buy on Amazon Best of the 1TB SanDisk options tested. Good sequential 4KB for its class.

SanDisk Extreme 256GB — Buy on Amazon Solid mid-range performer. RND IOPS is healthy relative to the MB/s number.

SanDisk BOTW 1TB — Buy on Amazon Good random read for a 1TB card. Sequential 4KB is a step below the Pokemon variant.

SanDisk Ultra 256GB — Buy on Amazon Well balanced. Random and sequential 4KB are close to each other — consistent under mixed workloads.

SanDisk Imagemate 512GB (model SR512) — Note: different model number from the SD512 in A tier despite the same branding. This is the one with the older logo, which matches this picture. Noticeably slower across the board but still a decent card.

Gigastone 4K Camera Pro 256GB — Strong sequential for an SDR104 card but random read is the weak point. Maxes out at SDR104 so there’s a hard performance ceiling. Gigastone also isn’t known for reliability. Reports an unknown vendor ID (45) but did successfully boot EmuMMC on Atmosphère.

PNY Elite 64GB — Exceptional 4KB performance for an SDR104 card. Only drops to B tier due to the SDR104 ceiling. Note that smaller capacity cards do tend to perform better in general.

SP Superior 1TB — The larger capacity comes with a random read penalty compared to the 128GB SP. Sequential is fine but RND IOPS is one of the lower DDR200 scores in the dataset.
C Tier
Acceptable but not recommended over better options at similar price points.

SanDisk Extreme 400GB — Consistent with the Extreme line. Slightly behind the 256GB variant in sequential.

SanDisk Nintendo Yellow Star 256GB — Averaged from 4 cards. Interesting profile — random 4KB MB/s is actually quite good while sequential lags behind. RND IOPS is lower than the MB/s number suggests, so take the random read with some nuance.

SanDisk Animal Crossing 512GB — Weakest of the Nintendo-licensed SanDisk cards across every metric.

SanDisk Imagemate 400GB — Below average 4KB performance in both categories. Hard to recommend over other options at similar price points.
D Tier
Significant performance or reliability issues. Avoid if better options are available.

Gigastone Gaming Plus 128GB / 256GB / 512GB — Averaged from 3 cards with very inconsistent speeds. Reports a fake vendor ID (00). Did successfully boot EmuMMC on Atmosphère, but the fake VID and high variance make this a reliability risk. Not recommended for a card holding your important data.

Samsung EVO Select 512GB (SDR104 variant) — Averaged from 3 cards. Same model number as the S-tier DDR200 version (GF8S5). This is the bad lottery — if you get the older green SDR104 version, performance is dramatically worse.
F Tier
Do not buy.

NUiFlash Ultra (any capacity) — Fake capacity. Completely unusable. These cards report a larger size than they actually have. Data written beyond the real capacity is silently lost or corrupted. Avoid entirely.

This card doesn’t fit cleanly into a tier. The sequential 16MB speed looks passable, but the 4KB numbers are the worst of any real card in the dataset by a significant margin. A full reformat made no difference. The sequential headline speed is misleading. Avoid.
